The Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team in the North Yorkshire Moors were alerted for the fourth time this year when they were tasked with aiding a 74-year-old man who had become poorly while on a hike with friends in the area.
The drama occurred at about 10.30am on a Thursday while a group of seven colleagues were taking part in one of their regular hikes.
999 was called after one of the group began feeling unwell in a remote area of Guisborough Forest, at a beauty spot know as Hanging Stone, one of the tallest points in the area.
The North East Ambulance Service asked the volunteer mountain rescue team for help due to the problematic location and their stock of evacuation equipment.
Members of the team and ambulance paramedics were able to reach the casualty’s location by driving their vehicles for two kilometres over the snow-covered forestry pathways in the land rover ambulance and then hiking with medical and evacuation equipment for 500m up the snow-covered trails.
Due to the terrible weather, the Great North Air Ambulance was powerless to help and couldn’t land so the unwell walker was put onto a mountain rescue stretcher, part of their arsenal of evacuation equipment, and taken down the path to the adjacent forestry track and the Land Rovers which were waiting for them.
The gentleman was then driven across the tracks to Hutton Village and to the expecting ambulance for passage to the nearest hospital.
Twenty team members were occupied during in the incident, which lasted three hours.
Team spokesperson Graeme White said: “This was quite a tough incident due to the distant location and the wintery circumstances but it is a situation for which we train frequently and one for which we are well equipped with all of our evacuation equipment and relevant tools.”
