Why using a rescue stretchers is the best option for mountain rescue
Mountain rescue teams were called to save four blokes in two separate incidents in the High Peak in March.
Three men, from New Forest, were saved from the top of Crowden Brook, after the team’s leader found them making use of their smart phone technology at the end of March. The guys were trapped due to the underfoot circumstances of snow and wet bog which slowed them down significantly. They were also only using smart phone lighting, which the rescue team says was “not appropriate” for those circumstances.
The rescue team took extra lights up with them to hand it over to the walkers as an extra safety measure as well as their rescue stretcher for any potential injuries that would require any casualties to be restricted. The AWOL men were discovered safe and sound, and were obviously extremely grateful for the help.
Rescue teams in Buxton were also called to a hillside above Castleton Village, to save a paraglider who had crashed there in the same week. The paraglider went through a hard landing nearby to a cliff cavern after his paraglider canopy had broken. The pilot, a man from Coventry, was given pain relief on site, was packaged up snugly, and placed onto a mountain rescue stretcher and removed from the hillside.
A rescue team spokesperson said: “The rescue stretcher was sledded down the steep grass with a back rope affixed to him, which provided steadiness and safety to the incoming air ambulance, some distance away on an even surface to land.”
He was eventually flown to a hospital in Sheffield for further treatment and the rescue stretcher was good enough to see him to his hospital bed for further examination.
